Winning Awards

Being an active member of the North Shore Photographic Society where I present my images on a regular basis. In 2010 I won the bronze medal in the Architecture section of the North Shore National Salon of Photography with the image ‘Britomart One’. In 2011 I won a silver medal in the set subject Power with the image ‘The Tower’. This is also when I joined New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography [NZIPP] to win five bronze in the prestigious nzipp Iris Professional Photography Awards 2011. These images demonstrate high standard of professional practice, craft and skill and are important recognition by my fellow photographers.

In 2012 I won twelve awards with North Shore National Salon in the categories Open Color, Open Monochrome, The Family of Man, Abstract and Urban Environment (the Bronze medals were awarded to the images: ‘Twins in Boots’ and ‘Kenwood’). This year I also won four Bronze and three Silver awards from NZIPP and have been awarded the distinction of Associate as well as being accredited as a Qualified Portrait Photographer by NZIPP. The title of Associate Member denotes a high standard of creative flair and communication.

In 2013 I won twelve awards at the North Shore National Salon in categories: Open Color, Open Monochrome, Vegetation and Portrait. My two Bronze medals were awarded to the images titled: ‘Looking Up’ and ‘Piazza del Campo’.  In 2013 I have also been awarded the Distinction Master of the NZIPP! The title of Master denotes a superior standard of creative flair and strong communication. NZIPP Distinctions are recognised across the world as a benchmark of excellence. Members who enter the annual Iris Awards earn points towards each level of distinction. My achievements in 2013 include two Bronze Awards, six Silver Awards and one Silver with Distinction. In addition, I became a finalist in the Portrait Classic category.

I also have achieved success across the ditch in AIPP [Australian Institute of Professional Photography] annual awards: I was awarded two Silver Awards in the Illustrative category and a Silver Distinction Award in the Portrait category, denoting superior in imagination craft and skill.

Conducted by some of Australia’s most recognised photographers, judging for the awards took place over three days at the industry’s annual show. Each of the thousands of images entered was critiqued in detail by an esteemed judging panel. The awards were judged according to originality, creativity, technical skills, quality of printing and presentation. The Awards are the most sought-after accolade in Australian professional photography and the standard rises each year due to the fierce competition. Associate of The Photographic Society of New Zealand

What a great privilege to be awarded the distinction Associate of The Photographic Society of New Zealand [PSNZ] at the Honours Banquet of the annual conference which was held in Blenhaim this year. Very honoured as I can now use the letters APSNZ after my name!

In order to qualify, it was not enough to submit a number of good images. To be successful, I was required to submit a portfolio: a presentation of photographic work in which the total has greater value than the sum of the individual parts. Being a portrait photographer, I chose to submit only full body portraits. My portfolio starts strongly and takes the viewer on a journey to a memorable conclusion. Each image leads to the next one. Consistent quality was also essential; no one image stands out as being either below or above the standard of the others (one very strong image can be as problematic as a very weak one).

The portfolio exhibits not only a high level of technical of proficiency but also skill with the camera as well as in processing and presentation, demonstrating artistic and creative qualities. Of utmost importance is the manner in which the portfolio was put together as a presentation . The images must “hang together” in order to provide a pleasing demonstration of both technical skill and artistry.
Comprising of six voting members, the Honours Board is appointed by Council to make recommendations on the granting of Honours for photographic achievements. Below is the sequence as presented to the PSNZ Honours Board:

2013 Iris Awards

Have just submitted my entries to NZIPP Annual Iris Awards. this was the culmination of effort to choose the best images out of the tens of thousands of photos which I have in my database. I then retouched them and made a few test prints to see that the final outcome is of the highest quality – only prints are submitted for judging and the ultimate test is to get these right. The final stage is to mount the prints on beautiful matt boards so they can be properly displayed. Eight prints out of the ten photographs were great and two had to be re-printed and re-mounted today.
This was a real roller coaster as so much of my time an attention throughout the past few weeks was dedicated to this mission. Once I received a certain grade in previous years, my aspiration is to exceed and surpass those achievements and to get an even higher score. The benchmarks keeps going up and my demand of myself is to excel as my proficiency becomes better and my technique improves. The overall quality of the photos is extremely high so this is a great opportunity to test my skills and to get acknowledgement from my peers that my art is of highest quality.
The judging is usually a nerve wracking experience and the anticipation is so high that I become really stressed… My top mark in 2012 was Silver with Distinction so I’m now looking for that and more. The process of selection is tedious and I try to consult with others but ultimately, I have to trust myself and my judgement. Some of my entries are very solid and ‘safe’ while others are a bit risky as I have tried a new photography technique called composite where I ‘plant’ a portrait into a scene. The portrait was taken inside my studio and the trick is to place the model in a different environment without making it float in space. It has to look natural with all the light and shadow to create a realistic photograph.

NZIPP is dedicated to championing Professional Photography in New Zealand. It represents the best professional photographers in all disciplines: Portrait, Landscape, Illustrative, Commercial, Wedding, Travel etc.

This year, the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography Iris Award Infocus annual convention will be held in Auckland at The Pullman Hotel from August 1st till August 6th. Judging for the Iris Awards will take place on the first three days August 1-August3, with seminars, workshop and master classes following. The judging is open to the public and all are welcome to view the process, 8:30am-7pm entry is free. This will be a great opportunity to see the top Judges in Australasia articulate their opinions. It is also where the best creative photographic artists in the country present their work. This is a not to be missed event, where you can learn and see the best photography in NZ. The Infocus Conference keynote speakers are American portrait photographer Greg Heisler and Trey Ratcliff.

On August 3rd, NZIPP will be holding an evening with ‘world renowned’ NZ photographer Rachael Hale McKenna which is also a public event ($45/person)
