2013 Iris Awards

Very excited about my achievement in this year’s NZIPP Iris awards: two Bronze Awards, six Silver Awards and one Silver with Distinction. In addition to being awarded the Distinction ‘Master of Photography’, I became a finalist at the Portrait Classic and Portrait Creative categories. Being a Master of the NZIPP, I can now use the letters MNZIPP after my name.

The New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography celebrates the excellence across a wide range of photographic genres. It provides opportunity for professional photographer to earn merit awards and recognises the outstanding achievement of a small number of photographers through the major awards: photographer of the year, category finalist, category winner, etc. Categories include: Commercial, Creative, Fusion, Illustrative, Landscape, Photojournalism, Portrait Classic, Portrait Creative, Student/Assistant, Travel, Wedding Album, Wedding Classic and Wedding Creative. There were 1,327 print entries this year so delighted to be part of this amazing group!

I also have achieved success across the ditch in AIPP [Australian Institute of Professional Photography] annual awards where I was awarded two Silver Awards in the Illustrative category and a Silver Distinction Award in the Portrait category, denoting superior in imagination craft and skill.

Conducted by some of Australia’s most recognised photographers, judging for the awards took place over three days at the industry’s annual show. Each of the thousands of images entered was critiqued in detail by an esteemed judging panel. The awards were judged according to originality, creativity, technical skills, quality of printing and presentation. The Awards are the most sought-after accolade in Australian professional photography and the standard rises each year due to the fierce competition. The Australian Professional Photography Awards are open to all Australian and overseas professional photographers. The awards represent the best of the best professional photography in Australia.

2013 Iris Awards

Have just submitted my entries to NZIPP Annual Iris Awards. this was the culmination of effort to choose the best images out of the tens of thousands of photos which I have in my database. I then retouched them and made a few test prints to see that the final outcome is of the highest quality – only prints are submitted for judging and the ultimate test is to get these right. The final stage is to mount the prints on beautiful matt boards so they can be properly displayed. Eight prints out of the ten photographs were great and two had to be re-printed and re-mounted today.
This was a real roller coaster as so much of my time an attention throughout the past few weeks was dedicated to this mission. Once I received a certain grade in previous years, my aspiration is to exceed and surpass those achievements and to get an even higher score. The benchmarks keeps going up and my demand of myself is to excel as my proficiency becomes better and my technique improves. The overall quality of the photos is extremely high so this is a great opportunity to test my skills and to get acknowledgement from my peers that my art is of highest quality.
The judging is usually a nerve wracking experience and the anticipation is so high that I become really stressed… My top mark in 2012 was Silver with Distinction so I’m now looking for that and more. The process of selection is tedious and I try to consult with others but ultimately, I have to trust myself and my judgement. Some of my entries are very solid and ‘safe’ while others are a bit risky as I have tried a new photography technique called composite where I ‘plant’ a portrait into a scene. The portrait was taken inside my studio and the trick is to place the model in a different environment without making it float in space. It has to look natural with all the light and shadow to create a realistic photograph.

NZIPP is dedicated to championing Professional Photography in New Zealand. It represents the best professional photographers in all disciplines: Portrait, Landscape, Illustrative, Commercial, Wedding, Travel etc.

North Shore National Salon

What a beautiful display of prints and digital images in 2013 North Shore National Salon of Photography currently showing twelve of my works including two Bronze Awards. This magnificent exhibition shows over 200 award winning prints as well as outstanding digital images from over 2,000 entries in categories such as: Portrait, Vegetation, H2O and Imagination. The exhibition currently takes place at Aotea Gallery, Level 4 Aotea Centre, until July 20, 9:00am until last show – entry is free.

While there, I just visited the incredible World Press Photo Exhibition which showcases the highs and lows of 2012. This is really a thought-provoking collection of the world’s best press and news photographs of 2012 – highly recommended photography from the top photographers, most are from conflict areas showing violence, pain and misery. Visit the showcase at Level 6, Smith & Caughey’s on Auckland’s Queen Street from July 6 till July 28. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students. All proceeds go to the Rotary Club of Auckland, suitable for 12 years and over.

This photo was taken early April 2012 morning in Invercargill. The camera was set on a low tripod just as the sun was rising. Shutter speed was 30 seconds ensured the waves would create a foam creamy surface.

This photo was awarded acceptance at North Shore Photographic Salon 2012.
